A Monster of a wedding!
After passing my Direct Access the previous year, my then fiancée (Emma) decided to take her CBT so that she could ride a 125cc motorbike. Whilst she wasn’t thinking about taking her full test anytime soon (if ever), she absolutely loved the Ducati Monster and said that if she ever passed her test that would be the bike for her, in red of course! On our wedding day I surprised her during my speech by wheeling into the reception room a brand new Monster 620, in red. She had no idea that I had bought it, which was a great relief to me as I had had significant difficulties trying to register and insure a motorbike in someone else’s name without their knowledge! I even managed to get the numberplate ‘EM57 WED’ so that she will never forget when she got married (Emma, September 2007, wedding).
Needless to say she completed a Direct Access course that winter, passing her test on the first try, and the following summer found herself accompanying me on a 1,500 mile round trip to the Alps. My wife is around 5 foot 2 inches tall and weighs approximately 7.5 stone with all lubricants and a full tank of fuel, yet had no problem handling the lightweight Monster (although some of the initial 180 degree alpine bends were taken with caution!).
See the attached photos showing Emma & the Monster on our wedding day, and another the following summer in the alps.
As it turns out, I created a bit of a monster myself, as my wife is now an avid follower of MotoGP, a huge fan of Nicky Hayden, and loves riding her bike.
We both still love the Ducati brand (Emma still has her Monster, which will probably never be sold due to the way it was received but will hopefully be supplemented; and I own a Sport Classic 1000), and we hope to take a trip to the Bologna museum and factory soon.
